Recent School Board Decision on Middle School Grading - Read below for School Board Response

We’ve listened! On Monday, December 21, 2015 the Board approved to update the Middle School Grading Procedures relative to grade weighting, 9 week grade calculations, and grade assignment.

1. High School Credit – Weighted high school courses taken in middle school will be weighted exactly as they are in high school. The middle school GPA and MS transcript will reflect the weighted grades. The weighted grade will also be part of the high school transcript and Grade Point Average (GPA) when the student matriculates to high school.

2. Nine Weeks Exams – Middle school 9 week exams count for 10% of the student’s grade for that quarter. All high school courses taught in middle school will continue with the 20% for exams towards the student’s quarter grade to maintain alignment with high school grading. Middle school students who are taking high school courses that require End of Course Exams (EOC’s) will have the exams administered and scored as prescribed by the Florida Department of Education.

3. Middle School Grades – To align middle school course grading practices with high school grading practices, the following three options are available for middle school teachers:

a. A-F Grading: The A-F grading system is on a 4 point scale.

b. Percentage Range: The percentage range is based on a 0-100 percentage scale

c. Total Points: Total points is based on categories of assignments and given a total point value.

As a result of the second semester gradebook changes, Quarters 1 and 2 assignments (not Quarters 1 or 2 or Semester 1 grades) may show a recalculation of assignment grades in some instances, with no negative impact to your child. Your child’s first and second quarter grades have not changed and the first semester grade has not changed.

Welcome

On Thursday, June 5, 2014, "SCPS was ranked #1 of the 17 largest districts in reading, mathematics and science. I am very proud of our incredible students, I am thrilled for our hard working teachers, administrators and staff and am cheering for our incredibly supportive community” stated SCPS Superintendent Dr. Walt Griffin.

In an era of increased statewide assessment and accountability, SCPS students continue to outperform the state in Reading by 10 points and 12 points in Mathematics. Students, parents, and teachers have a reason to celebrate this success and the tremendous effort put forth this year to reach for standards of “proficiency” and beyond, as defined by the State of Florida.

In particular, we can not emphasize enough the hard work of our classroom teachers who continue to deliver exceptional instruction to all students. Their work and planning translates to performance measured on mandated statewide assessments but it goes beyond just “testing.” They prepare our children for success in the 21st Century and the data overwhelmingly supports it! This is why SCPS continues to remain one of the highest achieving school districts in the state.

Tuskawilla has continued to be an A+ school for the past eleven years.
